Attempt the Intercept, or Cover the Goalie

Focus
Attacking Systems, Defensive Systems.
Skills
Footwork & Agility, Defensive Moves.
Purpose
The GK can make a desperate lunge to effect a turnover, however if they don't make it, this leaves the GS open. Good team work will see this player defended as best as possible.

  • Setup

Divide into two teams; choose an attacking team. Use cones to mark starting positions. The key to making the drill work is to position (WA - GA) just the right distance from (C) so it's difficult for (GK) to intercept, but not impossible. This may require you tweak (C)'s starting position. The object is for the attacking side to complete 2 passes to goal, the final pass going to the GS. The GK may attempt to intercept the first pass, or play it safe.
  • Step 1

Attacking (C) has a choice of passing to (WA / GA) - neither can move from their cone.
    Optionally have a defending (C).
After passing, (C)'s remain in the same spot.
(GD) starts too far behind (GA) to intercept, so can only close down their space
  • Step 2

(GK) has a choice of committing to intercept the pass, or simply dropping back to cover (GS)
(GK) shouldn't telegraph their move; be patient and use an element of surprise to pick-off a bad pass.
  • Step 3

If (GK) chooses NOT to intercept the pass and drops back to cover (GS), then recipient (WA / GA) must pass back to (C) as both attackers are covered.
  • Step 4

However within 5 feeds from (C), (GK) MUST attempt to intercept. Upon seeing the interception attempt, (GD) scrambles to cover (GS) left vacant by (GK). Attacking team perform the final pass to (GS) - who cannot take more than 1 step
    (GD) attempts to intercept
Optionally let (GS) take the shot
  • Step 5

Rotate subbed-out players if any, and retry. After several turns, rotate the attackers and defenders.
