Goalie System 4: Stay At Home

Focus
Attacking Systems.
Skills
Goalie Preliminary Moves.
Purpose
When the ball moves into the front-court, goalies perform predetermined moves to reduce indecision and leading to the same space. In this variation, goalies stay deep rather then be drawn up court. A good option if you have tall goalies who may be beaten for pace on the lead.

  • Setup

Choose {GA - GS] and defending [GD - GK]. Two feeders [WA - C] are 5m apart, both on cone (1). Defenders start on the sidelines.
  • Step 1

First round will be direct passing between feeders down the same passing lane
[WA] feeds from back cone (1)
[C] receives on forward cone (1)
[C] is stationary and there are with no opposition defenders on court
  • Step 2

Feeder [WA] delivers a pass to their stationary counterpart [C]
Point out that often the goalie is often the primary target for this pass, however this is what defines this strategy - the goalies stay home, allowing a feeder to play deeper.
  • Step 3

Now enact your systems within the circle
Generally you'll have a preferred target, assuming they have positional advantage
Goalies must work together to divide up the space and make complimentary leads
Experienced players will set screens for one another
  • Step 4

[C] finishes with the pass to the goalie in best position.
    Optionally take a shot.
Feeders shuffle 1 cone to the right next turn - centre third feeder "wraps around" and goes to other wing
  • Step 5

Next feed from cones (2 to 2), then finally cones (3 to 3)
Once final pass from (3) is thrown, swap feeders position for next 3 passes.
  • Step 6

Progression 1: This time the goal third feeder leads before receiving at (1), then (2), then (3)
To receive at (1 & 3), goal third feeder runs wide from middle cone (2)
To receive at (2), run centrally from either (1 or 3)
Feeder up-court always feeds from cone (3)
  • Step 7

Progression 2: For a moderate difficulty increase, introduce a [WD] defender who the feeder in the goal third must shake
Feeder up-court always feeds from cone (3)
Still no circle defenders at this stage, however the final pass can come from anywhere
  • Step 8

Progression 3: The real test - introduce circle defenders who apply pressure to the goalies
You can also have an interim difficulty level by just introducing a single circle defender
You can make it even harder by also having the [WD] defend the feeder in the goal third
