Defenders Screen and Crossover

A set play for working the ball from the defensive third, involving a screen.

  • Setup

    Choose 4 attackers, 2 opposition players. Players can play in preferred positions.
  • Step 1

    First attempt, perform a dry-run without the 2 opponents. (GK) starts with the ball on the baseline. (WA & GA) stand centrally side-by-side - if our team are x's then stand: o x x o.
    (WA & GA) provide screens for one another
    This setup ensures both players have front position once the crossover occurs
  • Step 2

    (GD) leads by running around the outside of the circle and around (WD) and their opponent.
    Players starting more centrally than their teammate lead to wing
    Players starting wider than their teammate lead centrally
  • Step 3

    The area vacated by the player making the dummy run is used by the other player to lead into and receive from (GK)
  • Step 4

    The second pass is to the player who made then first dummy run - (GD) in this case. The final pass is to (C) who can only move laterally to receive
  • Step 5

    Once you've mastered the dry run, introduce 2 defenders (GA & WA). Repeat with these opponents who can intercept. This time EITHER (WD) or (GD) can make the first move - work out a discrete signalling system.
    Naturally, direct opponents should follow their player. If they don't and become an easy outlet, allow (GK) to pass to them
    Try to keep the 2nd pass central rather be forced wide to the wings, reducing space
  • Step 6

    Progression for added difficulty: Introduce an opposition (C) as a third defender who shadows attacking (C)
    Attacking (C) must receive beyond the 1/2 way line
