Purpose
Mastering the
roll-off
and
roll-around
will allow an attacker to receive around a tight-marking defender. This has everyone practising these moves down-court.

Instructions
Setup
Coach (C) starts on the baseline as feeder. This drill can progress from technique-only (a line of singles) to competitive (a line of pairs), but start with a line of singles. Players need to be 5m apart, so form 2 lines if necessary.
Step 1
(C) looks to feeds the ball to (A), who must perform a half-roll before receiving
Step 2
(A) becomes next feeder for (B) who also half-rolls before receiving.
Step 3
Continue in this fashion down the line until the last player has received the ball.
Step 4
Players reset and will now work back up the line - this time players half-roll in the opposite direction, by leading with their opposite foot.
Step 5
Progression 1: If you have sufficient numbers (10+), the two lines can race up-and-back against each other
Step 6
Progression 2: Now use a
roll-around
to get around the marker
Step 7
Progression for advanced teams with sufficient numbers: Pair-up in a single line. Pairs choose defender and attacker who receives and either half-rolls or rolls-around them. Swap roles for the return lap.
The defender can be as active or passive as you want. To make it harder, allow them to intercept, or simply be an obstacle.
Coach can't feed 2 balls at once, so get an extra helper for first feed.
